Day 37 - At sea for a meet and greet, rest and eat...

Some people just don’t seem to appreciate that this was a day of rest (for us) and were showering at 6:30am.  Maybe not a loud noise, but enough to wake me.  Back to sleep anyway until a more respectable time for those of a certain age.

My intention was a light eating day and I managed well as far as breakfast was concerned.  At 11am we had our Cruise Critic ‘Meet and Greet’ attended by the Cruise Director and even the Captain.  It was raining outside anyway (Pic 1).  We didn’t circulate too much and there was no round of introductions either, which is probably a shame, as it would have been nice to ID some of the more prolific contributors.

We thought we’d head down for a deck 5 coffee – but there was nowhere to sit, so up to the buffet.  Sorry to say, the good intentions of a light day were eroded by the sight of a rich looking lamb curry.

What we also realised was that like the Dawn, the area across the ship, between both sides of the buffet, may have a speciality menu and today, it was Oriental, so plenty of choice.  (Night time it is “Crab Shack” – at a $20US surcharge.)

We took it outside to eat before heading back to the cabin to try and make some progress on the blog that may well have been posted a few days ago.  (The Internet signal keeps dropping out as I write this, so posting it isn’t going to be very easy.  Too many people these days with i-pads and smart phones…)

For afternoon trivia, Tony and Sheila were elsewhere and lo and behold, the two people who did join us were also from Nottinghamshire - Southwell!  We did pretty well with a score of 18/23 – thanks to Kiwi Mat’s Kiwi question – but still didn’t win.  We are weak on 1980’s music.  Mind you, for some of us, 1980’s music is weak.

As it was formal night, we dressed early as we went to the 6:30 Explorer lounge show with Southport’s Berni Flint.  (That is Southport UK, not QLD.) Another enjoyable show so we’ll keep the score of 8/10.

The Captain’s welcome in the atrium was the usual crush – with many people on the outer fringes making too much noise, so I have no idea what he said, other than I caught the number of Brits aboard – about 1200, Aussies 450, Canadians 150, Kiwis about 59, Americans, Mexicans, Romanians, Germans, Italians and so on.

No lobster but it was a case of the famous French onion soup, followed by two mains (for me) – shrimps, followed by steak.  The steak medallions were very tender but we have learned that portion sizes generally are not huge.  Maybe it will be a light eating day tomorrow – given the warnings of the high costs in Norway? (Four pics of table 21 and our waiters – Jonathon and Ritchie.)

On to the theatre for the Production Show – “I got The Music”.  Before it started, we chatted to three lovely Welsh ladies and they were answering the on screen quiz.  One of them was pretty good considering it was 70’s and 80’s music generally.  The one next to us said “She’s good because she has grand-children.  I only have a budgie!”

Anyway, the show wasn’t the best we have seen, as it too was on the 70’s and 80’s and we weren’t overly impressed with the costumes either.  (Show pic - The dude in the DJ is Cruise Director Kelvin who is a good MC, not one of the dancers.)

It was still not totally dark at 11:15pm.

Tomorrow – Oslo.  No tours planned but we’ll head for the Ho-Ho bus.
