Day 80 - All at sea instead of on land...

Oh dear.  An early Tannoy announcement from the Captain was that with a considerable swell and a tender port, on the grounds of safety, it wouldn’t be possible to tender ashore, so we’d simply cruise slowly around Easter Island.  Oh deep joy.

We have already had 4 days at sea, so this is the 5th, to be followed by 6 & 7, then scenic cruising (again!) of Pitcairn Island (8) followed by two more days at sea (9 & 10) before Papeete, Tahiti…

No point in getting upset by it, as safety is, as always, paramount, so no-one is to blame, but ten sea days on the trot merely confirms that our decision for next year is probably sound.

We are sorry to miss out on Easter Island (Chile) but the upside is that we now have $400 extra on board credit…  Maybe we can just cash it in?

So, a leisurely stroll up to the buffet with the majority of passengers firmly ensconced on the port side, armed with binoculars and cameras with long lenses, ready to try and salvage usable photographs of an island with a fascinating history and strange statues with a somewhat uncertain history.

We stayed on deck near the ice cream parlour - but that didn’t open for coffee until 11am, so Darryl and I went back up to the Horizon Court for the hot chocolates, oh, and some Danish pastries that looked lonely and forgotten.

As we rounded the island, we managed a pic or two of the statues, but at such a distance, not really what we wanted.  What you see here is either a cropped still from the video or an even more severely cropped image from the Nikon.

We even skipped trivia and after a while, we returned to the cabin – and it wasn’t too long before we’d finished one complete lap and headed west again.  Horizon court for a late lunch which included a very nice meat cannelloni, some stewed beef and what looked like a pork rissole.

Paula headed to the theatre for a showing of the ship’s Machu Piccu video.  I dozed whilst watching the animated movie ‘Frozen’… Later in the day, we started to get some TV channels back again, but were very saddened to hear of the death of Robin Williams.

Just for change, we each had a pot of tea in the atrium, so my pot ended up with 5 tea bags as the others prefer a weakfish sort of a brew.

After dinner, we debated on whether or not to go to the theatre for entertainer, Bayne Bacon.  Why the debate?  Quite simply, out of 7 cruises with Princess, he has been on all except the recent Baltic’s cruise - and his act never changes.   He is a fine guitarist, a fair pianist but his patter never changes.  Sadly, tonight was no exception, though we didn’t walk out.

Afterwards, we went to the Wheelhouse bar intending to dance a little, but there weren’t many there and the music was a bit slow, so we ended up chatting to Deputy Cruise Director Matt and he was joined a few minutes later by CD Mark, now recovered after a couple of days off.  I happened to mention Bayne Bacon and how the repeated shows were a bit of a drag and that I listed and marked the entertainers for my own reference.  He asked for a copy of the list, so that is a job for tomorrow - there will be plenty of time…

We called into Jammers night club on the way past along with Darryl & Sue, Mike and Sue and that made the numbers up to 20 – excluding the cruise staff and the Captain’s wife!  We didn’t stay long.

Clocks back another hour tonight.
